Al Purdy Songbook (featuring Gord Downie)
#1

So apparently there was a documentary that came out in 2015 called "Al Purdy Was Here". Never seen it, but here's the trailer:

The soundtrack/companion album was just released in October 2018 and features Downie's "The East Wind" as well as a live performance from Gord reading Purdy's "At the Quinte Hotel." Pretty cool. The album also features songs from Sarah Harmer, Greg Keelor, Bruce Cockburn, Neil Young, Dave Bidini, and Leonard Cohen, among others.

Here's Gord's "At the Quinte Hotel"

I believe there was a fundraiser for an entire original album for this (performed by Downie and others)
The funding didn't reach its goal in time so the donations were refunded.

In case anyone hasn't seen this already - or is looking for it, here's a dramatization of At The Quinte Hotel staring Gord (from 2002):

The movie is fantastic. Highly recommended for anyone even remotely interested in Al Purdy's poetry, Canadian literary history, or just solid documentary making.
DOP was Nick de Pencier of Long Time Running fame.
There is footage of Gord performing at a gala fundraiser to preserve Purdy's A-Frame as a writers' retreat. Of course, he does "Quinte Hotel."

You can rent it on iTunes. If your library has access to the streaming service Kanopy, you can watch it there, too, for free—you just need a library card.
