Stipe and new REM...hahaha
#1

Mr Stipe, what a guy. Check this quote out:

"Let me tell you a secret: we have a great fucking record in the bag. It's a big change. It's coming out on April Fool's Day."

Haha...well, Idunno about you guys but that inspires a little bit of confidence in me, when a guy like Stipe says "fucking" in describing a new record, after the relatively quiet Around the Sun.

BTW, on that note, does anyone have the REM Live discs that came out a few months ago? I keep meaning to pick it up...really want to hear what the Around the Sun tracks sound like live.

The live album is awesome, and the new track they debuted on it is a kickass oldschool rock and roll number. I actually like Around the Sun, however, so I'm not sure how much my opinion counts.

That Vid is awesome. Who made that?

I like "Up" and "Reveal" but was super disappointed with "Around The Sun". One thing I have learned with R.E.M. is that their music really depends on where you are personally at the time. When "New Adventure In Hi-Fi" came out I didn't care for it. I went back to it years later and found I loved it. Perhaps I'll like ATS someday.

As for the new album... I have read Stipe and the boys really got knocked down hard after Rock The Vote failed to have a positive effect on the last election. Circumstances seem to have brought them back to a place where they have something to say and a bit of fire in the soul. Mike Mills said the new album will make it cool to like R.E.M. again. I could really care less if the squares like R.E.M. but it would be nice to see the boys shake up the landscape again.

I have not picked up the live CD. My family made me stop getting new books and music so they can get me stuff for Christmas. I haven't been this excited for Christmas in years.

REM is terrific. poor Peter Buck though....

Old school REM pre 90's is genius.

The bolded bit doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Worst live show I have ever seen though, at least when I saw the Green tour. The Indigo Girls blew them off the stage.

True. but the article I quoted from, from Ultimate Guitar actually, after that quote said that April Fools Day was a 'traditional' release day for new albums. That and we know they have new shit, with their live shows in Dublin and all.

It's called ACCELERATE(caps necessary) and will indeed be out on April 1. Apparently they'll be posting a video somehow relating to the album every day on this website. Here's to hoping it's a gooder!

REM release new album on Facebook and MySpace
By Claudine Beaumont

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected/ma ... rem113.xml

REM are to share their new album on social-networking sites a week before its official release in shops.

Music on the web: REM's latest album will be available online before it hits the shops. The album, Accelerate, will be available for streaming through the iLike music discovery service. As well as listening to the complete album in its entirety, iLike users will also be able to embed the album on their Facebook, MySpace and Bebo social-networking profile pages, and share the music with friends.People who want to buy the album will be able to do so via links to Amazon and iTunes from the iLike pages.

"Debuting Accelerate across the web is in keeping with the spirit and immediacy of the album," said REM's lead singer, Michael Stipe. "We wanted to do something superfast and super real. Music, art, and pop culture are about right now, and nothing else matters. Accelerate is our turbo-charged response to the times we live in."

The album will be available from March 24 through iLike's dedicated REM page, www.ilike.com/rem, and will be accompanied by an exclusive video of the band talking about the making of the album. REM have been experimenting with new digital music distribution methods for a while.

They recently invited fans to create their own music video for the album's first single, Supernatural Superserious, using raw footage provided by the group, and acknowledge that the music landscape has changed. "I think you can either go with it or sit back and watch it happen," Stipe told Billboard.com. " I would rather be out on the field than in the bleachers," he said. "It was one of those ideas that was presented to us and it seemed like a good one, so we ran for it."
Accelerate will be the group's 14th studio album in a career spanning more than two decades. Their decision to stream the album online first before its physical release is another example of music companies and bands embracing a new digital landscape.

In October, Radiohead allowed fans to decide how much they were prepared to pay for new album In Rainbows, while earlier this month Trent Reznor released his latest Nine Inch Nails album online in a variety of formats, ranging from a free download to an expensive, limited-edition album and merchandise package that appealed to super-fans.
