Spotify

I’ve never been a Spotify user but recently downloaded the app. For those who pay for premium access, sell me on it. Is it truly offline listening? Is it worth $10/mo?

Ahhh the Netflix of music.

I subscribe to Spotify Premium, and I believe it's 100% worth it. Once you subscribe, you can listen to full albums Ad free, and locally store files on your cell phone or computer.

Most new albums I want to listen to are on there on release day.

They have tons of hard-to-find albums as well (took me forever to find the Jack Green back catalogue online a few years ago, low and behold they are all there on Spotify; they even have Not Guilty and Fix This Head).

I believe the three month trial period for Spotify premium costs only $0.99. It is well worth the ten a month.

I say try it out, and it you don't like it, you can cancel anytime.

After trying it out, I can never go back to free Spotify.

I subscribe to Spotify Premium as well and it really is "The Netflix of music" as Sean describes it. I just renewed for $99 for the year (save $20 versus month-to-month). I was buying most of my music through iTunes and then moving it onto my iPod to listen to in the car. I've now converted my old iPhone to a "music" phone onto which I download music from Spotify to play in areas where I don't have access to Wi-Fi. I don't have much use for iTunes anymore.

The advantages as I see it:
1. With free there is shuffle play on albums, which I found annoying. With Premium you can play an album straight through.
2. Limited skips with free, unlimited with premium. This means you can go straight from "Cemetery Sideroad" to "Highway Girl", avoiding that mess in between.
3. Ability to download with premium
4. No ads
5. Immediate availability of albums... rumour is that in 2018 some artists are going start holding back their albums for 2 weeks after release date to the free users but they will be available immediately to Premium subscribers.

It's been well worth $8 a month to me.

...and the one disadvantage: you can only save 9,999 songs. I left Spotify for Apple Music because of that. I realize it's a minor complaint for most people, but it's a big one for me; I won't hit Apple's limit, which I believe is 50,000, but I was up against Spotify's almost from the off.

Having said that, if you don't mind the limit, Spotify's great. I think Apple Music's great, too. My wife and I spend $15 a month for our family membership, and it's worth every penny. We both use it daily.

Gee, I really hooked ya on him eh Sean!?!?! LOL :thumb:

Just looking into Spotify myself. Ended up picking up an Amazon Echo Plus which I am told runs Spotify quite smoothly. Thought I might give it a try for a few months.

I'm debating getting it as well- my question is does Spotify work underground? I'm on the ttc ( subway) daily, will Spotify work when I'm underground?

If you have files saved locally, then yes.

I don't save 100% of the albums I follow, but a decent chunk. You can 'save/follow' albums without having them downloaded. You can also filter your library to only show downloads.

When I'm commuting, I filter my library to show downloads only.

When connected to wifi, I uncheck that box, and I can listen to albums I have saved to my profile and not downloaded locally.

Hope that helps.

Pro tip: if you're using Spotify (or Apple Music!) on your phone and don't have a great data plan, make sure you change your settings so that the apps only function on wifi. I was getting creamed the first couple months I was using Spotify...I don't have much data and I was downloading like a bad habit. Streaming using data isn't much better.

I travel a lot and it's a godsend. Even being able to listen to the same playlist at work and at home is worth it for me.

Hey Sean, I'm not sure if that "try it yet" is for me- but if it is then the answer is yes, and I really like it a lot. I'm about to finish my 99 cent 3 month trial and spend the 10$ a month to have it. Thanks for the info a while back.

Another convert here too. I signed up in January and haven't used my iPod since. The scary thing is, I know I haven't even scratched the surface of whats available!

Just learned today that there is a 10,000 song limit to your library.
