A business associate successfully used Nicorette gum as a quitting aid. He cut several pieces into very small "bits" about half the size of a Tic-Tac and carried them in a 35 mm film container. When he felt the need, he'd pop one in his mouth. Like o78 said, he had a hard time counting his masticatory actions. With these little pieces, it was easier for him to chew less frequently.
Anything to get a little distraction going with hand & mouth will probably work. When I'm traveling, I use Tootsie-Pops on long flights and layovers. Works pretty well for me, temporarily; I always light up in the rental car, though. Damn it!
