Computer Trouble
#1

Hey guys,
just me again with a problem that I can't solve... and my lack of technological skills doesn't help. Anyways... my CD Drive won't read... well CDs anymore...
If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. The sooner this gets solved, the sooner Hipbase radio will be running again :thumb: .

Either your drive has died, or something in Windows isn't recognizing it properly.

Assuming that the drive is physically okay, Right Click on My Computer. Choose Properties and then the <Hardware> tab, then click on Device Manager.

Locate your drive by expanding the list for DVD/CD-Rom Drives. Right Click on the cd-drive that's not working and choose <Uninstall>

At this point, wait for the confirmation that the drive is uninstalled, close down everything & reboot the machine. When Windows re-starts (I'm assumining you're using XP), it will recognize that a "new" piece of hardware is attached and will automatically launch the "add new hardware" routine, and re-install the drive.

If this doesn't work, the drive itself may be broken, but I've seen this a few times and the uninstall/install procedure seems to do the trick.

Thanks for the advice! Didn't work though. I think I need to bring it in, except I need to pick and choose when to bring in my laptop. Ugh... such an inconvienance.

Doesn't read anything. They spin though. I was talking to Corby, and he said that he read that my style of laptop (Toshiba Satellite A-100) has been known to have its drive simply not work.

Ah.

Well sorry I couldn't be more help. I had the same problem a couple years ago, and also fixed my step-father's drive using the uninstall/install routine.

Good luck!
