This isn't a slam on anyone, but when you hear other artists cover Hip songs and sing Gord's lyrics you realize how much better the Hip was than anyone else.
What a wordsmith, so much died with that man.

Went to see Blackie and the Rodeo Kings on Belleville last night. Tom Wilson did his speech on Gord (that I know was posted in the other thread so I won't repost here), they then went into Ahead By A Century. I had a quick look on youtube and see someone posted a video of their Kingston performance of it.

This was my first time seeing a tribute first hand and have to admit it was a bit emotional, hearing Tom's words, looking around the audience and seeing the warm, solemn smiles from the crowd and the standing ovation after it was over. It was a combination of goosebumps and almost tears.
Sure it wasn't as great as The Hips version, but it didn't matter, what did was seeing the amount of respect other musicians have for Gord & The Hip and seeing the audience react to it all. The audience was full of young and old, some probably Hip fans, some maybe mediocre fans, and some that might not have been a fan at all, but the reactions were all the same, just love and respect all around knowing what Canada has lost. It was incredible to see.
On a side note, geez Colin Linden is such an underrated guitarist.

Didn't see it posted earlier (although I only did a quick scan) but last year my wife and I went to see Our Lady Peace and they did a cover of Grace, too at the end of In Repair. Definitely teared up a little during that; couldn't find a clip from Halifax but here's one from a different stop:

Speaking of Our Lady Peace, they have a new song out which was written about the first time Riane Maida saw the Hip live. Here they are performing it in Clifton Park, NY with a dedication to Gord at the beginning. Pretty cool tune.

Just got back from seeing Emily Fennel play down in Kingston with Gord S and Rob. She has a killer voice, just crazy powerful.
I didn't take my camera out as it would have just spoiled the moment, but second song in the encore Gord S gave a small speech, started to get chocked up and was able to get out "this is for Wicapi Omani". They then broke into Wheat Kings with Gord and Emily taking turns on the verses. Glad I was there to see.

I wish I could've taped but not too inconspicuous from the front row.. also they asked not to.

I'd consider this to be a bit unexpected.

Wow, that Tori Amos cover is pretty amazing.
And speaking of Hip covers, Strombo has put up all the videos of the Hip 30 performances on Youtube. My favorite is still the Sadies' version of Long Time Running.
