Wow thanks!

Looks like a federal air marshall discharged his weapon, and one passenger is injured on a flight from Colombia to Miami...that's all we know so far, back to you Dave.

That pretty much sums it up! CNN are pretty much on par with the National Enquirer. In fact, I have a hard time believing anything on the news. What you hear on CNN and NBC and CBS and ABC newscasts are probably 10% accurate.

Well the BBC over here have reported that he boarded the flight with his wife, they argued, he makes a run for the front of the aircraft where he is challanged by 2 air marshalls before one shoots him on the walkway.
His wife was apprently shouting something about mental illness and not taking his medication.

Could be a hard one to explain...
'So he possibly had a bomb and you shot him as he was leaving the plane??'
Nearly as difficult as a Brazilian in a tube...

Given the current climate, having a mental illness and boarding a plane without taking your meds, then claiming to have a bomb, well.......

But from current reports there wasn't a mention of a bomb, that is what the problem might be.
Same as here when the lad was gunned down in london, initially for running away with a 'quilted jacket' on. Turns out there was no quilted (read 'bulky') jacket on him. We run the risk of having a few too many collateral damage cases by over-excitable law enforcment agencies who have been overhyped into expecting a bomber at every turn...

Remember that in the de Menezes case -- the guy shot in London -- the police initially said that he was wearing a bulky jacket, that he ran from them, and that he jumped the turnstiles. From what we've learned, those claims were untrue.

So I'm waiting for the full facts to come out on this one. He may have been mentally ill, he may have been off his meds, and he may have caused a disturbance, but none of that adds up to a reason to shoot him. Now, if he did actually say he had a bomb, then the air marshal has to make a judgment call and I think most would agree that the shooting was unfortunate but justified.

But we don't know that yet.

It's a catch-22 situation and the second guessing is always going to be there. The question is do they overtrain the security teams to the point where they are second guessing themselves in a critical situation or do you allow them to use their instincts and training in situations where they have reason to believe that their suspect is an imminent threat?

If the guy was yelling he had a bomb, then you can't fault the air marshal. But if that part of the story turns out to be a fabrication -- as with the de Menezes thing -- then I'd be asking why. Cops don't lie for no reason.

It's that simple.

I'd agree with that, if they are lying about him yelling he had a bomb or something along those lines, then I'd wonder if they were covering something up. I'm sure his wife was trying to tell them that he was nuts, but in those situations you can't be sure that isn't a diversion.
