But would like to open it up to what everyone thinks he is the hips equivalent to the dead’s Barron hall show

I think contenders should be

MLG 95
Toronro concert hall 1997
Another roadside attraction 1993 markahm fair grounds
Maybe kumbaya 1993
London phantom power surprise shows 1998
Evening with the hip 2000

Would love to hear all your thoughts

Not sure which particular show would be considered their best or most defining moment, but it could be argued that the Roxy & Elsewhere bootleg (LA, '91/93) is easily the most famous. I remember the cassette getting passed around quite a bit in the early 90s, and then later I found it on CD at Recordland in Calgary. I think it still holds up nicely as the definitive Hip show/bootleg.

The '98 London PP show is a good one as well.

Best Hip show I ever saw personally was their Novato, CA gig in '98, followed closely by their mind-blowing performance at the Sasquatch Festival in 2006.

Second night at Fort York '06 is perhaps my favourite concert ever. The Sadies and Weakerthans were fantastic openers. I went with a couple of old friends before I moved to the States for four years. It was the first Hip show for both of them. Incredible setlist. Opened with Don't Wake Daddy. Sherpa. Chagrin Falls. No Threat. 38 Years Old (for the first time in over a decade). Amazing, amazing, amazing night. So much fun.

Didn't the Edenfest promoters get investigated for fraud or extortion at one point? I don't remember the whole story, but they definitely ran into some financial problems. I also remember hearing at the time that the Hip were paid a cool $1 million for that show.

Here's a fun article about that show, posted a couple years ago on the 20th anniversary:

And here's some media footage. Man, the Hip were absolutely massive in '96. They were truly at the peak of their powers.

I would add Woodstock 99 to the list. Maybe not their best performance of all time, but it was so awesome to be in the crowd and see the response and all the Canadian flags. They were first on the bill on Saturday ( followed by kid rock).

I read this in two ways, my favourite show I attended and my favourite live show to listen to.

Nothing will ever compare to the first time seeing them at Massey Hall, second night of the FC tour. The darkened stage, the beginning of Locked and every single light in the theatre going on right at the kick after "rushing by the machine revving tension". Goosebump, hair raising moment that set the night up for just an incredible show. It will always be my favourite I attended.

As for my favourite live show I listen to, I have always enjoyed the 98 Toledo Zoo bootleg. The entire band played great that night and Gord's random comments about being at the zoo and interactions with the crowd fit so well with the show.

It's funny how people remember things differently....I was at the 2004 show and remember it as being completely unremarkable.

The 3-4 that stand out to me of the 20 I saw were

Ottawa 2000
Montreal (metropolis night 1) 2006
Ottawa NAC night 2 2009
Ottawa 2016

Definitely the Roxy show for me. It was my first Hip bootleg and the one I've listened to the most. As for personal shows, it would have to be Saint John in '95 on the DFN tour. It was the only Hip show I've been to where I've found myself in a mosh pit and on the look-out for crowd surfers coming over head. That physical contact heightened the music back then.

I also have a fondness for the Gino show in Sweden in December '94. The overall show is fairly average that night and Paul's amp is fuzzy but it has my favourite version of NOIS: "If you're freaked" and "I've seen more blurry lights than starry nights" - they should have evolved this into a complete song yet instead it showed up in a poem 7 years later. That version alone makes the show infinitely re-listenable.

Actually I listened to this bootleg and thought it was a great performance. I find most bands sound worse at festivals but the Hip always found a way to up their game. They opened for the Stones at Magnetic Hill in Moncton (75K people) and it was another great one.

Agreed, that was easily the best show by any band I've ever seen. And hearing 38 Years Old is the best concert moment I've ever experienced.
