Edmonton June 22nd Show Recording
#1

I managed to record the show on Tuesday at the New City. I need some suggestions on how it should be formatted and distributed.

I recorded it using a Sony Mini-Disc (MZ-N707) and a Sony mic. My friend has a MiniDisc with an optical out and G5 Mac with an optical in. We'll be using that to transfer it.

What I'd like to know is what format should I put the file in? I see people trading SHN and FLAC files as well as WAVs. I don't know how to work with SHNs and FLACs on the Mac, any suggestions? Are those the best formats to use?

What's the best way to distribute it? Set up a Bittorrent? Put it on one of the FTP sites?

Hmmm.. I don't know a lot about shn's, Flac and bittorent but the best way probably would be to convert to wav because it's easily burnable to cd from wav and then you can do b&p's to people.

Someone else could probably lend some information on converting to shn or flac.

I definitely think that bittorrent is the way to go. We can all get in on it at once, instead of just a few at a time on the FTP. It should also be a lot faster with so many people all sharing at once. And I'm sure there'll be a lot of interested parties. I'm not sure if it's any different on a Mac, but both SHN and FLAC are very easy to use, and its easy to find out lots about them. FLAC does have a better compression ratio.

if you can find a site with lots of bandwidth ftp would be great but if there is enough ppl wanting it a torrent would be the best

I've been looking into FLAC and I figure I can convert it myself. But hosting the torrent would be great. I'll give you a shout once I get it off my MiniDisc.

Would it be OK to do two torrents? I was thinking I'd make one long file that has everything I recorded including all the crowd noise at the begining and end. And then I'd make a set of files that are basically just the songs with any excess crowd noise cut out. That way anyone who wants to just listen to the songs doesn't have to sit through 3 minutes of crowd chanting in between each encore.

Just fade in and out for the encoues and leave 30 seconds of croud noise at the beginning. Try and only release one of your sources. Makes thinks easier to track.

Yeah I was going to fade between the encores. But I thought some people might be fascinated to know that they were playing "Jungle Boogie" and "Little Green Bag" right before the show and that "Johnny" has been "lookin' all over" for his "brother" after the show. Guess I'll save that for trading.

SHN or FLAC are great, although I'd suggest FLAC.

Shorten is what you need for SHN's on the Mac: http://www.hornig.net/shorten/
MacFLAC is what you need for FLAC's on the Mac: http://www.danrules.com/macflac/

Or check out: http://www.etree.org/macos.html and download xACT an all-in-one tool for SHN & FLAC on the Mac.

Let me know when you seed it, and I'll be sure to open my window to help spread the show via Bit Torrent.

Just let me know where it'll be.
Bit Torrent = I'll adapt
FTP = I'm up til 4 in the morning
Doesn't matter.

(But maybe break it up into parts or chapters cuz I got slow 56kps)
