Seriously, I need to know this. I tried googling it but all I get are sites about a movie called Year of the Dog and a DMX album.

I could tell you but where is the fun in that? How about a rhyme game?

O.K., try this.

If Gord were a badger he would be chucking dirt.

Oh his shirt, I get it now… you were to oblique...
(and I thought, negphil just was dropping an obscure Brady reference..

Lets try to get back on track…

-- it is a performance for the Junos, were music acts get nominated for ****** of the year? Perhaps Gord was just having a little fun...

They won the Juno for "Entertainer of the Year" that year-- an award they made fun of quite a bit during those years. I remember them doing a radio interview in Seattle where Johnny said it made them sound like they were some kind of circus act.

You guys are so helpful. So no one has seen this shirt anywhere else than on Gord the night of the Juno performance?

That performance took place 16 years ago... what exactly are you looking for?

It's a shirt. Whether Gord was making a statement with it or not can only be answered by him. Beyond that what do you want to know?

Is it a band? Is it an album by a band? You know, most of the shirts I wear that have some slogan are music-related. If I wear my FISH R DUMB, PLUCK AN EYE FROM ONE shirt some people may not get that it's an obscure Residents reference and that it is, in fact, official Residents merchandise. I'm just fucking curious, that's all. I'm pretty sure some people asked themselves what that weird "Hi, How Are You?" shirt Kurt Cobain wore in, like, every single photoshoot for a while was. Turns out it was a Daniel Johnston shirt. Do you see where I'm going with this?

O.K. Sorry about the stupid joke. I do have a theory regarding the shirt.

Work with me on this one .

In 1992 The Hip had been the recipients of massive amount of success and praise. Receiving an award like "Entertainer of the year" must be a strange experience. Any thinking person would be forced to recognize the inherent absurdity of such an arbitrary award.

Gord Downie is a musician and a poet. As a poet he is undoubtedly familiar with the great authors and poets of modern literature. One of western civilizations greatest authors/poets/artist being the (late) great Kurt Vonnegut.

In 1992 the famous periodical magazine "The Humanist" named Kurt Vonnegut "Humanist of the year". In response to the award Kurt wrote an exceptance speach that was published as an article in the magazine. The article is titled "Why my dog is not a humanist".

My theory if that Gord Downie was aware of the article and found it an apt metaphor for his own experiences thus inspiring the shirt.

Then again maybe it's an indy band.
