Bootleg Club - First Edition, Volume 04
#1
Welcome to the third volume of our very first edition of the Hipbase Bootleg Club!

Every two weeks a member of the Hipbase will post an audio recording to be featured in the Hipbase community. We will then all be required to rock the hell out of the selected audio day-in and day-out for a two week period (or ... also once).

Volume 04 runs from December 2nd - December 15th. The Volume 04 selection has been made by Hipbaser sean.bonner! My oh my! That's me!

And the show selected is....

If you are unsure how to play (or convert) FLAC files, please do not hesitate to PM me and I will make sure you get to listen to it! I have only listened to the first source for this show as of now, so I'll personally be listening to Mark's recording for this edition as I have not heard it yet.

Here is what Hipbaser sean.bonner/I have to say about this selection:

Quote:With 2016 finally winding down, I thought It was the perfect opportunity to look back on the Man Machine Poem tour. The show has a setlist that I think most Basers would have thought to be a pipe dream at this time last year.

Also, In Between Evolution is near and dear to me, as it was the album/tour that catapulted my Hip fandom.

I don't know what else to say about this show that probably hasn't been said already. This is already one of my favourite Hip recordings of all time, and I hope you enjoy it just as much as I have!

If you did not sign up to be part of the selection committee, you can still participate! please feel free to listen to the show, and join the discussion in this thread.

I am not going to post the text file for the two sources, however they are contained within the downloads.

Hope everyone enjoys! Volume 5 is coming soon... !

Easily the best Ottawa show since Dec 2000.

Speaking of which, if anyone has a bootleg from that "evening with' show - one that doesn't have the horrible clicking through the last five songs - I think it should be one of these bootlegs.
1995-02-10 Toronto; 1996-12-12 Toronto; 1998-07-04 Hamilton; 1999-02-22 Toronto; 2000-06-24 Toronto; 2000-12-06 Ottawa; 2002-08-02 Toronto; 2004-10-23 Ottawa; 2007-01-31 Oshawa; 2007-02-02 Ottawa; 2011-07-01 Toronto; 2012-02-09 Oshawa; 2015-02-19 Toronto; 2015-04-15 Oshawa; 2016-08-18 Ottawa

That is an accurate assessment, from someone who has been to every ottawa show (including the grey cup!) since 2000.

I think there's a bootleg out there with the 'non-clicking'...possibly on the archive.

So I've just listened to Mark's recording, and there is one I concretely prefer.

Mark - I love you and all you have done here (and for me) over the years, so please don't hate me for this...

I would say the recording from Hipbaser gsmacleod / Shane is substantially clearer. Even though people love to talk about how quiet Ottawa crowds are, the roar from the Canadian Tire Center overpowers Mark's recording, IMO.

Now, let me also say that if Shane's didn't exist, I wouldy be listening to Mark's recording of this show for the next forty years. And it's not like his recording didn't turn out... there's just 1001 factors that play into how a recording turns out, so I think Mark would understand my sentiments.

So, if you're not sure which one to listen to, I would say you should listen to this one:

Ocean Next may be better than sex, or salt n vinegar chips.

I'll have to listen to the recordings, but going from memory of attending the show....

Agree with Sean -- Ocean Next is one of my favorite tracks on MMP, and live it was great. Had a really cool visual, if I recall was a guy in a mask and snorkel for the most part. Hopefully there's some sort of live album or tour compilation that includes this track.

Machine -- I really like how they did this song live. Makes me wonder what many other MMP tracks could have sounded like live.

Grace is amazing -- again I have to hear the recording, but in the arena was one of those electric moments. I know there was some grumblings about the crowd after the show, but from where I was (second section on the floor) it rivaled any show I have ever attended in terms of the audience. When Gord left the stage and the band kept jamming is when the emotions really hit me.

Really like that intro they did for ABAC -- again, I hope it's captured on an official release.

Flamenco -- not sure if I ever heard Gord sing it better than he did this night.

There are some funny Gord moments too, around one of the encores when he mentioned Trudeau is a good one -- also I think in Gus (at least in the IBE section) where he drops the mic (sort of funny and sad, and he tried the "mic kick" and missed). When Gord speaks about playing the city, the rink just went quiet -- and amazingly in this day and age, there was no buffoon yelling out something idiotic.

I was lucky enough to also have tickets for Kingston, but I left this show with a real feeling that this was goodbye. I think I only missed one or two Ottawa shows from the Up to Here/Road Apples days onward. They played here a lot, cultivated an audience, and you could really watch them grow as a band. Every time they came back they were better, and when you did not think they could get any better, somehow they did. If this was their last stop in Ottawa, it was quite a show to leave us with.

I do love listening to this show and other shows from this tour during quick drives and walking the dog, due to the 'mini-sets'.

I only wish In Sarnia made an appearance at this show, as I think that's 2nd fav from Man Machine Poem.

I was at 3 shows this summer and loved every minute of each. For some reason I have intentionally avoided listening to recordings from the tour, maybe I don't want to think about the finality of these shows.

Having said that, I did listen to this show, and thought the band sounded great. Opiated was a highlight for me and I was so happy to get to hear it in London.

Did last summer just exist in it's praises?

Love how 'If New Orleans Is Beat' returned to it's electric roots when it appeared this tour (as I think it's only showed up in the acoustic WATS sets after 2004 ?)

Also, I had been still kinda chasing Greasy Jungle. I saw them play it acoustically in Montreal in 2009, however, never got to see them rock the fuck out to it until that night. Sounds great here.

This is a great show, the crowd is definitely into it. The band is so good, and Paul cooked up a great set list too (love the album format!). While Ocean Next is a good song, Gord is having some pitch problems here (tending to be flat), otherwise this a very strong performance for Gord. I got to see the IBE set in Edmonton and I am glad to hear it here as well. Unfortunately missed Nautical Disaster and Fiddler's Green in person this time around. Great choice for a show from this tour, I might not have snagged this show otherwise. Looking forward to the next volume!

'Final Night' that it's my selection, so I listened to my favourite run of this show again tn (after a complete runthrough last Thursday). That's Up To Here --> Man Machine Poem ---> In Between Evolution

When I listen to this show for the rest of my life, it will always bring me smiles, tears, and memories I would never trade for anything.

This will always be one of my all time favourite Hip recordings.

Thanks everyone for jamming this show with me. I hope you were able to enjoy it as much as I already do.

Also, could somebody please clarify this:

At precisely 3:50 into Poets , does Gordie yell at me 'SWIM SEAN'?!?!?!

Sounds like it to me.
